IDEAS student goes abroad to experience deaf culture in Siena, Italy

Hello Spartans,

My name is Juliette Vayer and I am a rising senior at UNCG. I am an out of state student from Northern Virginia majoring in Interpreting, Deaf Education and Advocacy (IDEAS)with a concentration in interpretation.

This summer I am traveling to Siena, Italy to learn Italian Sign Language, Italian Deaf Culture and Italian Spoken Language. I tried to do this program before before COVID hit and I’m grateful to have this opportunity now.

One of the main things I hope to take away from this experience is to improve language proficiency! There are other Deaf students going to study abroad, so I know whether I’m using Italian Sign Language or American Sign Language, my hands will be up most of the time! I’m also incredibly excited to have the opportunity to travel and learn about another country and its history.

I believe that as human beings it is our duty to continue to learn about others and the world around us. Exposing ourselves to new places and new cultures allows us to have new experiences with a more open mind and a caring heart. I am thrilled with this opportunity to study abroad!
