Romania’s education minister reportedly on reshuffle list

Education Minister Sorin Cîmpeanu is on the list of ministers under discussion for a future reshuffle, according to Edupedu.ro citing sources familiar with the negotiations.

“The decision of President Klaus Iohannis is expected, but the Liberal Party (PNL) and the government have already distanced themselves from Cîmpeanu, because of the [controversial] education bills,” a source close to the presidency told Edupedu.ro.

The main source of discontent for President Klaus Iohannis was Prime Minister Nicolae Ciucă’s vulnerability to allegations of plagiarism, especially since Ciucă is considered the main presidential candidate of the Liberal Party, supported by Iohannis, according to G4Media.ro.

Ciucă’s plagiarism re-entered the public debate strongly in mid-July, with the launch into public debate of education bills that provide for three ways to protect plagiarists: the abolition of the CNATDCU – the key institution for solve plagiarism in doctorates -, the possibility of abandoning the doctor’s degree free of charge and without motivation by any plagiarist and amnesty for plagiarism after three years.
