#StandWithUkraine – CONFERENCE – Local governments unite for well-being and peace
How do local governments in Ukraine cope in times of war? Mr. Oleksiy CHERNYSHOV, Minister of Community and Territorial Development of Ukraine, Mr. Vitaliy KLYCHKO, Mayor of the City of Kyiv, and several other mayors of Ukrainian municipalities directly affected by the war and those representing relatively safer places discuss the current situation and their immediate challenges and needs with peers from neighboring states and international media representatives.
This March 18, 2022 event, organized with the support of the Center of Expertise for Good Governance, is the first in a series of “online marathons” aimed at discussing the emergency situation in Ukraine and offering advice and support for Ukrainian local authorities. The series is designed to provide an opportunity for meaningful interaction between local authorities in Ukraine and global media.
On Friday, March 18, 2022, the mayors and local leaders of Ukraine’s closest neighbors – Hungary, Moldova, Poland, Romania and the Slovak Republic – which host the largest number of refugees fleeing war are invited to listen to their peers in Ukraine and to contribute to raising awareness and uniting for well-being and peace in Europe.
On February 24, 2022, the Russian Federation, with the support of the Republic of Belarus, launched an unprovoked military aggression against Ukraine. In addition to attacking Ukrainian military and defense infrastructure and government buildings, Russian military forces continue their targeted attacks on critical civilian infrastructure and densely populated residential areas from the air, land and sea. utility infrastructure completely ruined or badly damaged. However, local authorities in Ukraine continue to provide public services to their citizens, including in areas currently occupied or surrounded by Russian troops. Their efforts to continue to provide essential services to the local population and/or IDPs in these times of crisis should be explained, discussed and supported. You are invited to #StandWithUkraine by spreading this information and encouraging meaningful interaction with the media.
Further information and dates for the next stages of this important online marathon will be released soon.
